BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF
THE REVEREND DR. MICAH R. GAINES
A native of Lexington, KY, Reverend Dr. Micah R. Gaines has committed his life to serving in the Lord’s Church as a lifelong learner and faithful preacher. An advocate for education, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Community and Leadership Development from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Divinity from The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary. His concentration as a Pointer-Brown-Goodman Fellow centered on, "The Church Has Left The Building: A Model for Virtual Ministry in the 21st Century."
In 2013, Dr. Gaines responded to his calling to the gospel ministry, obtaining licensure and subsequent ordination at Consolidated Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. Serving as Pastoral Assistant to his father, Rev. Richard Gaines, for six years, he also contributed to ministry in various capacities at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, TX, New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, and Union Branch Baptist Church in Chesterfield, VA. Returning to Consolidated in May 2019, he assumed the role of Pastor of Worship. On October 29, 2022, he transitioned to become the 4th Senior Pastor at Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit, MI, succeeding the retiring Dr. James C. Perkins.
Under the leadership of Dr. Gaines, Greater Christ has been blessed with tremendous growth through initiatives of new ministry development, consistent community outreach, an increased digital footprint to national and international audiences, empowerment opportunities for her leaders, increased membership, and by God’s grace and Greater Christ’s generosity, scholarships for student members.
In the community, Dr. Gaines has actively held leadership positions in organizations such as the Lexington Leadership Foundation, Lifeway, and the NAACP. A highly sought-after preacher and teacher, he has shared his insights nationally and internationally. He is actively engaged in the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. He is also a legacy member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and an ardent Los Angeles Lakers fan.
Dr. Gaines is the only child of proud parents, Rev. Richard and Mrs. Sarah Gaines, and is married to the former Adrienne Marie Cosby, a native of Houston, TX. Adrienne is a graduate of Fisk University and the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications. Together, they take pride in being parents to their son, Micah Richard, II.
Living with daily gratitude for everything God has accomplished thus far, Dr. Gaines believes that when God does God things, we should never be surprised; we must instead expand our expectations!
